JUSTIN
'are you going to eat that?'
Justin is the goofball power engine of the team. For him, anything is possible if you train for it. His motivation knows no limit. To prepare for Seventy-48, he developed sleep-paddling techniques so night would not get in the way. He learned to instant sleep to recuperate while on the toilet. He lets off steam through forward thrust and he maintains that his chafe-tolerant butt is his most photogenic side to secure the window seat on the bike. He also promised Nat she would grow up to be as tall as he is if she pushed 275W on the bike. She hasn't grown an inch.
Birth: Oakland, CA. Primary Role on the team: pedal masher. Age he became a biker: 21, even before he was a man (seriously, he waited until after he was 21 for that?). Family: wonderful parents and two siblings who never cease to impress him. Education: Webb Institute and he considers himself lucky to be liking the one thing they teach (designing boats) Profession: Ship building project manager. Type of biking he loves: cyclocross on technical courses with lots of steep uphill. Other Hobbies: Rowing, Nordic skiing, Goodwill prowling, reading sci-fi, house projects, scones. 1-Hour Power Output on the bike: 244 Watts In his own words Why Team Shut Up and Drive?: "The strategy is sound and the people are enormously capable, yet humble." |
His initial reaction to racing without a toilet: "Finally an environment where it's acceptable to poop directly over the side."
